Milking cows and heifers sold to a top of 2200gns for the first Border and Lakeland sale of 2019 at Carlisle where no fewer than 22 animals sold for more than £2000 with the 124 milkers cashing in at £1874.

Selling for the top price was the day's reserve champion, from S Liddle and AW Wilkes, of the Farm Organisation Company, Little Fencote, Northallerton. Their Gildersbeck Skyfire Ivy Fire is sired by Gen-I-Beq Skyfire, bred from three generations of Ex or VG red and white cows and sold to Messrs Wilkes, Wensley Road, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

The champion, Dunnerdale Loptimum Bo consigned by Stephen Boow, Corney Hall Farm, Millom, was one of several to make 2150gns. Sired by Delaberge Loptimum, and giving 33kgs, she was purchased by Messrs Prentice, New Cumnock, Ayrshire. Another heifer from this home sired by Seagull-Bay Razzle also sold for 2150gns to Messrs Rudd, Kirkbride, Wigton.

The Graham family of the Heathersgill Holstein herd, Anguswell, Kirklinton, Carlisle, sold a number of heifers to a top of 2150gns for Heathersill Estate Duchess. She traces back to the Manorpowis Duchess cow family, and sold giving 47kgs, to Messrs Hunter, Berrier, Penrith.

Also hitting the 2150gns mark was Espland Masterful India, from Alan Cannon, Brampton, Appleby. This fresh heifer is by Masterful, bred from two Ex dams and sold to neighbouring farmers, the Robinson family, Lanercrost Brampton.

Stranraer-based Messrs McCulloch, Ardwell, bought the final lot at 2150gns, Stowbeck Honeybee Maiden,

The Stowbeck Holstein herd owned by Len and Chris Wilson, Skirwith Hall Farms, Penrith, received the final 2150gns bid for Stowbeck Honeybee Maiden. This fresh heifer is out of the VG86-3yr Stowbeck Buckeye Maiden 2 SP LP70 and bred from five generations of VG or Ex dams.

The sale started with an elite embryo auction featuring embryos from many of the top cows in the Holstein and Jersey breeds. In all, more than 100 embryos sold to 850gns to average £429 with the lead bid coming from the Luck-E Awesome Jacuzzi Red heifer.
