A BUSY ringside saw priced peak at £2050 to average £1580 at the second Borderway Monthly Dairy Day Sale at Carlisle, where 166 head of cattle were up for grabs.

Sale leader at £2050 was a milky heifer giving more than 31kg from the Mounsey family from Ashfield Farm, Carlisle. She is by Ballycairn Oman Pello, bred from a high producing dam by Spooky and sold to Messrs Irving, Stranraer.

The Lawries from Grangehall, Lanark, sold the top priced cow at £2000. This was an Aftershock daughter out of a dam that twice gave more than 13,000kg. She changed hands giving 48kg per day, to Messrs Hunter, Penrith.

Two heifers came under the hammer for £1950, including an entry from Messrs Hastwell, The Bulidings Farm, Kirby Stephen. His Unix-sired heifer giving 31kg per day, was knocked down to Messrs Fisher.

Matching that bid was the heifer from Richard Livingstone's consignment from Kirtlevale, Gretna. This Ards Paramount-sired heifer bred from an Azure dam with milk records of more than 10,000kg, was knocked down to Messrs Carr, Wigton.

British Friesians heifers were topped at £1620 for a daughter of Winnoch Black Jack from R Neill and Sons, Thornington Farm, Northumberland, while cross-breds sold to £1300 for Swedish Red heifer giving 25kg from Andrew Graves, Home Farm.

Padog Farms, North Wales, sold 26 July calving Kiwi cross-bred cows from their efficient spring calving herd which sold to a top of £720 on two occasions to average £535.

Trade for in-calf heifers remained excellent value for money and in most cases was a buyer’s market, with heifers only a month from calving selling for around £1200. In-calf heifers were topped at £1820 for a Toc-Farm Fitz daughter due shortly to Relough Generate from Ted and Linda Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm. She was and bred by the Meadowise herd.
