Salers bulls met a disappointing trade at the second round of the Bull Sales at Stirling, with averages slipping £349 on the year, albeit for four more sold.

It was nevertheless a good day for new breeders, Niall and Katy Blair, who were selling their second bull here which went on to top the sale at 6500gns when purchased by pedigree and commercial producers, Peter Watson and sons David and Adam, Darnford, Banchory. The bull, a May 2017-born entry from the Blair's six-cow pedigree herd from Easter Cammock, Glenisla, is an AI son of Bacardi Herbie, out of Cumbrian Jolie, a Cumbrian Joker-sired female bought here as a heifer for 1500gns.

Next best at 5000gns was Alister MacKenzie and his son, also Alister's Whitebog Magic, from the 100 pure-bred herd at Fortrose. This youngster is another son of the 3600gns Seawell Diplomat – a bull that has bred numerous high priced bulls to a top of 12,000gns – out of Whitebog Gollygosh, a young cow by the French sire, Bijou which has already bred a twin bull calf at 3500gns. Commercial producer, John Fisher who relies on Salers cross cows for his suckler herd at Meikle Labrax, Leswalt, Stranraer, was the final bidder.

Heading all the way up to Orkney at 4000gns, Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness, bought Murray Lyle's Strathallan Marvel, a similarly aged bull from Mid Cambushinnie, Dunblane. He is by Seamore Kawasaki and out the Drumlegagh Brandon-sired Cleuchhead Carat 12.

Just behind on 3800gns, Aberdeenshire breeder, Andrew Sleigh, Newseat of Tolquhon, Tarves, sold the November 2016-born Tolquhon Lancelot, to Jim Innes and Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly. He is by the Trafalgar son, Tolquhon Christophe and bred from the Whitebog Vinnie-sired Tolquhon Reine.

The champion, Rigel Lancer Poll, an August 2016-born bull by Rigel Officer, made 3500gns selling to the judge, George McDougal, Bassendean, Gordon, Berwickshire. His dam, Rigel Jolene, is by the nine-year-old show cattle breeder, Rigel Byron.

Top price amongst the females was 2000gns paid for the first heifer from J Manners' Seamore herd draft from Deanfoot, Denholm, Hawick. Seamore Mojito, a two-year-old heifer if fully French bred being by the imported sire, Fleuron and out of the Tino daughter, Vodka which was also brought in from France. The buyers were J Martin and Son, Swinlees, Dalry, Ayrshire.
