Limited Edition, a black Limousin heifer from Robert Hutchinson, Valley Farm, produced a new centre record price of £6600 at Barnard Castle Auction Mart, last week.

Champion at the pre-sale show of 18 haltered calves, it sold to the judge, Nigel Leighton, Goole.

Another Limousin heifer, this time from JW Dent and Sons, Naby View, Lartington, picked up the reserve honours and later sold for £3000 to Messrs Marsh, Dover. The same consignor, also sold the third prize Limousin heifer at £2800.

Naby View was back in the tickets in the unhaltered section, judged by David Anderson, Maryport, who tapped out an 11-month-old Limousin steer from the Dents as his choice of supreme. She went on to sell for £1380 by R Alder, Ponteland.

The reserve, a Blonde steer from RW Dalton, West End Farm, Hunderthwaite, made £1250 to the judge.

Top priced bull at £1205 was a Charolais from T and DI Allen and Son, Chatterley, that was knocked down to L Staley, Marwood.

Outwith the show cattle, the sale of more than 600 head of feeding bulls and store cattle saw steer and heifer averages rise on the year and for 131 more sold. By the end of the day, steers levelled at £1078.98 (+ £10.31), heifers cashed in at £1064.52 (+ £9.87) and bulls at £1007.14 (-15.86).
