More than 300 head of dairy cattle to include several breeds were forward for the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale at Carlisle, where trade peaked at £2300 for a Fleckvieh bull from the Portencalzie dispersal with freshly calved heifers selling to £2100.

Topping the milkers at £2100 was a pedigree Holstein heifer consigned by Robbie Scott from Shacklehill Farm in Ayrshire. Nethervalley Mincio Ruby, by Mincio and from a Cushathill dam bred by the Owen family from Eaglesfield, sold to Messrs Beaty, Egremont, Carlisle.

The Vance family from Low Barledziew Farm near Newton Stewart sold four heifers to average £1917 with two selling for £2000. First was Barledziew Paxon Marion, by AltaPaxon, which changed hands giving 41kg to Messrs Roper and Son, Longridge, Preston, while Barledziew Roble Maude by AltaRoble, made the same money selling to Messrs Byers and Son, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire.

Fleckvieh milkers sold to £2050 and £2000 for second calvers from Ivor Gaston and Son, who were dispersing their Portencalzie herd from, Kirkcolm, Stranraer. The first, a Dutch imported cow giving 33kg having calved in June was knocked down to Messrs Martin, Dumfries while the second, also imported from The Netherlands and giving 40kg, sold to Messrs Barnes, Whinfell, Kendal.

The dispersal of the family's herd saw 124 cows and heifers average £1203, with a Fleckvieh bull from the dispersal topping the trade at £2300. This was Mannlich, a rising five-year-old by Genostar Vogt, originally imported by Gordon Henderson, and bought by Messrs Beddoes and Sons, Churchstoke.

Bulling heifers and heifer calves dropped in value with well-bred and well grown pedigree Holstein heifers averaging £546 and a strong group of Montbeliarde bulling heifers averaging £743.
