Longtown

SOME 52 pens of lambs were forward for C and D Auction Marts' Christmas show and sale at Longtown judged by Darren Gardiner of RF Stavely, Bury, St Edmonds, who found his champion and reserve winners in the first and second prize pens of Beltex.

Champion was the first prize pen from RN Scott, West Meiklethwaite, Wigton, which weighed in at 42kg and peaked at a price of £175, selling to West Scottish Lamb.

The reserve from Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, weighed in at 49kg and sold at £135 to the judge.

Out with the show, the 5059 prime sheep saw Beltex and continental lambs easily sold at 220-300p per kg to give an overall average of 197.3p.

Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale judged the 22 prime cattle and cast cows forward for the Christmas sale, and presented the championship honours to a black Liumousin heifer from A and A Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan. It weighed 590kg and sold for 240p per kg to local butchers, W Kirkup, Longtown.

Reserve was the first prize native-bred bullock, a Galloway from IR Armstrong, Shankfield Head, Hethersgill, scaling 570kg. It realised 190p to Border Meats, Lockerbie.

St Boswells

Beltex lambs bagged the champion and reserve honours at Harrison and Hetherington's Christmas show and sale of prime lambs at St Boswells on Monday.

Judge Ben Gray, found his champion winners in a pair of 48kg lambs from Messrs Anderson, Headshaw, Lauder which later sold for £200 per head to WP Tulloch, Paisley.

The reserve lambs from the entry of 90 pairs, was the second prize winners to the champion from Messrs Green, The Craggs, Lilliesleaf. They scaled 48kg and realised £122 to Michael Malone of Edinburgh Ltd, Edinburgh.

Leading the entry 21 cast cows was an 810kg British Blue cow from Messrs Fleming, Mosstower, which secured the tri-colour before selling for £1401. It scaled 810kg. Reserve and top price went to a 962kg Limousin cross from Messrs Ross, Wester Middleton, that made 201p or £1933.
