Entries from local producer, John Thorpe, Blackburn, dominated Hawes Auction Mart’s Christmas show and sale of store cattle, securing the majority of top awards, and prices which included a new centre record of £4200.

His champion, a pure-bred British Blue heifer topped the sale selling to Henry Tustain, Epwell, while the reserve from the same home, a Limousin heifer which stood second in her class to the overall, realised £1650.

Mr Thorpe also produced the third prize heifer, a Charolais, and first prize steer which later sold for £2000 and £1390, respectively.

Overall, heifers averaged £1061 and steers at £986.
