A new two-day format for United Auctions' May multi-breed bull sales at Stirling, to accommodate Covid social distancing, saw Charolais and Simmental bulls both sell to 9500gns with both breeds seeing improved averages.

Of the 36 Charolais bulls forward for sale, 21 sold to level at £5615, a rise of £370.46. This compares to 28 Simmental bulls that went through the ring to average £5345, a rise of £509.86, with 21 finding new homes.

The all whites which were sold first, were topped by the firm of JM Cant and Partners' Panmure Pringle, a December 2019-born entry from Easter Knox, Arbirlot, Arbroath. The bull, a son of the 12,000gns Elrick Jester, owned in partnership with the Firhills herd, was brought out by Abbie Anderson, and sold to JH Anderson, Cloy, Fortrose. The dam is the Blelack Digger daughter, Panmure Isabella.

Second top price for the Charolais breed was 8000gns paid for Thrunton Pioneer, from Ian Campbell and Sons, Bruce and Andrew, Alnwick, who also sold bulls at 7500gns and 7000gns. Their September 2019-born entry bought by W Pringle and Son, Yorkston, Temple, is a son of the 26,000gns Balmyle Dickler and bred from the Newhouse Bigal-sired, Thrunton Flamenco.

Simmental bulls also peaked at 9500gns for Denizes Knockout, from Lancashire breeders, Michael and John Barlow, Four Oaks, Leyland. A son of Blackford Galaxy, a bull bought privately and a former overall champion at the Highland Show, this similarly aged bull is bred from the Ashland Tornado-sired Denizes Melody and sold up to Orkney with Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness.

Two Simmental bulls sold for 8000gns with the first being Roy and Marbeth Weatherup's Roma Kinetic, an 18-month-old entry from Romavale, Denholm. The couple who are selling their 30-cow herd, received this money from D McCallum, Shoreton, Cubogie, Dingwall, for a son of Islavale Frontier, out of Roma Nina's Fancy.

Matching that 8000gns was the last bull in the ring, Overhill House King Henry, a 16-month-old by Islavale Heston, from Richard McCulloch, Overhill House, Armadale, purchased by J Coventry and Sons, Newbarns, Forfar. He is out of the Corskie Copper daughter, Overhill House Gretel.
