Holsteins from James and Louise Wilson’s Evening herd landed both the champion and the reserve honours at the July Border and Lakeland Club sale.

The entries which formed part of a herd production sale from Evening Hill, Thursby, Carlisle, were topped at 8000gns by the champion, Evening Atwood Jessie 2 VG88-2yr, which sold to Denis Oneil buying for his Denholme herd from near Gisburn.

Bred from a strong cow family tracing back to an Ex94 fifth dam that produced more than 130tonnes of milk for the Dalesend Holstein herd, she is by Atwood and is a grand-daughter of the Ex91-2E SP LP60 cow, Evening Struik Jessie. This youngster which sold due with her second in December to Stantons Chief sexed, is also entered for the National in September.

The herd sale which was staged after the Club event also received 6000gns, 3600gns and 3000gns for youngstock.

Selling for 6000gns was a yearling heifer by Claynook Miami bred from the herd favourite, Riverdane Ashlyns Gold Ex95-2E SP LP60.

Evening Mi Oh My Ashlyn is also a grand-daughter of the Ex94 Riverdane Talented Ashlyn that was All Britain cow in 2012. Messrs Paul of Slatabogie Holsteins, Northern Ireland, were the final bidders.

Young calves peaked at 3600gns for the seven-month-old Evening Sidekick Sallie, purchased by Messrs Grimshaw, buying for their Carldanton herd near Bolton. Bred from 12 generations of Ex or VG cows, her grand dam is the Ex95-4E SP LP70 cow, Evening Talent Sallie.

The same buyers also went to 3000gns and 2700gns for youngsters. Top price here was the dearest from the Beatexus cow family in the 14-month-old Evening Apps Betty, a Lindenright Apps daughter and potential 10th generation Ex or VG cow.

Selling at 2700gns was Evening Sidekick Nell 2, a seven-month-old calf by Sidekick out of the Ex94-3E Evening Meridian Nell.

Pre-sale judge, Kirsty Yates, of the Meiklefirth herd from Castle Douglas, went to 3000gns for the 10-month-old heifer, Evening Calvados Irene, a daughter of the Highland Show cow, Warnelview Cup Irene Ex95-3E SP LP70 and sired by Blondin C Calvados.

Matching that 3000gns bid was Evening Gold Chip Baby VG88-3yr, purchased by Messrs Wilson, Thursby, Carlisle. This heifer in milk by Mr Chassity Gold Chip goes back to the Ex92 2E 3* Evening Sensation Baby and sold due in January to EDG Rubicon sexed.

The club sale was topped at 3600gns by the winning junior heifer, Kepculloch Lambda Mary from Robert Steel, Balfron. Bred from the same family as the Ex97 Medway Supreme Maude and sired by Lambda, she sold to the Carter family, Gerrard House, Wigton.

Next best at 2700gns was the top priced cow, Liscabank Lotta Ruth 2 ET, a second calver from Andrew Parkinson, Liscoe, Preston. She is by Oconnors Lotta Class, and bred from the Ex95 Liscabank Million Ruth which is a daughter of the 2012 Great Yorkshire Show champion, Ards Duplex Ruth Ex93 SP LP50 48*. Bradley Farms, Poulton-Le-Fylde, Lancashire, forked out the cash.

Top price for J Burrow and Son’s Stardale herd from Tunsteads, Preston, was 2600gns paid for Stardale Perseus Carlina, a fresh heifer purchased by Messrs Sharp, Keighley, Yorkshire. This Perseus daughter is bred from the Ex94-4E SP LP100 cow, Stardale Ramos Carlina.
