Demand for animal feed has fallen further with the latest projections from the AHDB pointing to reductions last recorded in 2016 and more on the way.

Squeezed beef and dairy margins have resulted in such producers relying more on forages with the result that the total cereals required for animal feed is estimated at 12.387m tonnes, down 162Kt on March’s estimate and 742Kt lower on the year.

A reduction in pig and poultry numbers have also significantly affected cereal markets. Total UK wheat availability for 2022/23 is estimated at 18.585Mt, up 25Kt from March’s estimate, and 1.187Mt higher year-on-year.

Wheat usage in UK animal feed is forecast at 6.807Mt, down 139Kt from the March estimate and 435Kt lower than 2021/22 levels.
