From Carlisle to Dingwall, trade of breeding and store livestock remains buoyant with price per kilogram surpassing 500p for store cattle in Quoybrae.

Dingwall

Dingwall Marts' Hill Day of in-lamb hill breeds of sheep sold to a top of £1500 on two occasions for in-lamb Blackface females.

First at that price was the pre-sale champion from Robert Cockburn, Hill of Errol, purchased by the judge, Archie Mackinnon, Achnacloich. This was a one-crop ewe scanned with twins to a £45,000 Midlock.

Matching that price was a one-crop ewe from Thomas Muirhead, Orchilmore, scanned with twins to a £160,000 Dalchirla, purchased by J Mackenzie, Lochnell.

Reserve champion went to the regular castle consignors J. Wight & Sons Midlock with a really sparky gimmer scanned a single to the 10K Glenrath, being knocked to M. Phil Stewart, Bomkelloch for £500.

In-lamb Blackface gimmers sold to £1200 from J Wight and Sons, Midlock.

In-lamb Cheviot ewes and gimmers sold to £500 and £320 from Ms H MacDonald, Achentoul Farm Cottage and Queen Elizabeth, Castle of Mey.

In-lamb Bluefaced Leicester gimmers reached £1000 from J. Wight and Sons, Midlock.

At the firm's main sale store hoggs (1958) averaged £95.78 at Dingwall and Highland Marts sale having sold to £184 for a pen of Cheviot mules from 31 Larel, Halkirk.

Aberdeen Angus bullocks (63) superceded that cashing in at 322.8p with a top prices of 364.4p per kg for a five 402kg entries from Gladhill, Garmouth or £1890 for a 728kg stot from Millhead, Tarland.

The 388 heifers which cashed in at 311.8p were topped at 384.2p per kg by a pair of 190kg Limousins from Upper Forgie, Keith or £2300 for two 622kg Simmentals from East Town, Tarland.

Leading the 43 Angus heifers was a pen of five 472kg entries from South Balkeith, Tain, which made 317.8p per kg while a pair of 606kg blacks from 2 Bogie Street, Huntly, sold for £1760. The average was 293.2p.

Top prices were paid for a 547kg Limousin heifer from Shona Gunn, Upper Dounreay, Thurso, which made 521p per kg or £2850 when selling to G and L Carrol, Aucharroch, Kirkton of Kingorldrum.

Charolais' topped the bullocks which peaked at 408.2p for a pair of 343kg stots from Sibmister, Castletown, or to £2040 for a 748kg entry from Aimster, Thurso.

Overall, 391 bullocks averaged 329.1p and 268 heifers levelled at 322.1p.

Aberdeen Angus entries also sold well with 67 bullocks cashing in at 326.3p (+23.4p) having sold to 356.6p per kg for a 387kg from Greenvale, Dunnet or £1810 for a 622kg from Latheron Mains, Latheron.

The 15 heifers peaked at 296.5p for 452kg Angus from Cruithni, Tofts, or £1540 for a 549kg animal from Blackpark, Watten, to average 278.8p.

Caledonian Marts' fortnightly store cattle saw 592 head forward, and included the month's show and sale judged by Euan Pettigrew of Faskine Farm, Airdrie.

Mr Pettigrew found his champion in a 485kg Charolais bullock from R McNee, Woodend, which he later bought for £1780.

The reserve, a British Blue heifer from MJ Stark, Bluebell, weighing in at 415kg and sold for £1740.

Bullocks averaged 307p selling to 397p per kg for a Limousin from GS Stewart, Wester Whin, Falkirk and to £2000 for Charolais from J and J Brown, Loanrigg, Slamannan.

Heifers averaged 286p, with a top price of 419p paid for the reserve, a British Blue from MJ Stark, Bluebell, and to £1790 for Simmentals from A and J Orr, Hill O’Harthil, Harthill.

Black and white bullocks peaked at 257p from JWK Paterson, Low Three Mark, Stranraer and to £1330 from A Black, Norrieston, Thornhill.

The 632 store hoggs and grit ewes saw the former sell to £122 for Beltex crosses from RD Morgan, West Leys, Perth.

Bullocks sold to £1980 for a 658kg Limousin cross from D and R Holdings, Low Bowhill, or to 447.5p per kg for a 362kg Charolais from J Warnock, Dreva, to average 330.36p.

Heifers peaked at £1920 or 492.3p for a 390kg Limousin cross from T Laird and Son, Sunnyside and Carbello, to level at 314.1p.

Dairy bullocks peaked at £1330 for a pair of 501kg British Friesians from WG Linton, Muldron, to average 253.68p.
