A sirloin from 21-month-old Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer carcase from Ross Bros, Wardhead, Strichen, won the Asda steak competition, at the Royal Highland Show.

The competition to showcase the supermarket's 'Extra Special Range' which uses Certified Angus from their Premium Beef Tier, was judged by a team from Asda after the steaks had being dry aged for up to 30 days.

The initial entry of 54 cattle was whittled down to steaks from eight cattle following maturation and a rigorous testing regime, with the winners presented on the ABP stand at the Royal Highland Show.

The winning steak – No 2. in the photograph – was from a black heifer that graded R=4+, with the runner up being a sirloin from a 22-month-old steer that graded R-4= from R Robb and Son,Woodhead of Aberdalgie, Perth.

Third place went to a steak from a 14-month-old young bull from Hamish Sclater, Denhead,Turriff. It produced a R+4= carcase.

The eight finalist steaks were selected from cattle from Ross Bros, Wardhead, Strichen; Robert Neil and Partners, Upper Nisbet, Jedburgh; PS Millar, West Hillhead, Monikie, Dundee; WAL Lawson, Scotsmill, Tullynessie, Alford; R Robb and Son, Woodhead of Aberdalgie, Perth; Denhead, Dunlugas, Turriff; J Nicholson and Son, Welton, Blairgowrie and Messrs Stewart of Kininmonth, Kininmonth, Cupar.
