A huge crowd of buyers and enthusiasts was forward for the dispersal of John and Robin Templeton’s esteemed Carnell Ayrshire herd which goes back more than 100 years.

Such was the demand for these cattle boasting deep rooted pedigrees and high production figures, that milking cows and heifers averaged in excess of £2100.

Furthermore, young heifer calves sold to a top of 2800gns on two occasions, to average £1215.

Top price was 4400gns paid twice. First to sell at this money was Carnell Peg 202 VG86-2yr, purchased by Steve Bailey, president of the Ayrshire Cattle Society from Cheshire.

This November-calved heifer by Bruchag Starman is bred from a home-bred Excellent 94 dam by West Spittal Regiment Red that produced more than 80 tonnes of milk. Peg 202 which sold in calf to Hunnington Fantasy, also had three Excellent sisters all with big production figures.

The Peg family produced a number of good stylish cows with Carnell Peg 192 selling for 4000gns to the Struthers family, Bolston Farm, Ayrshire. This Ex91 pointed daughter of Haresfoot Simply Perfect is out of the Ex92-2E LP 60 cow, Carnell Peg 168, that produced in excess of 14,000kg as a seven-year-old cow. She sold dry and due to Blue Spruce Ringer.

As expected the Snowdrop cow family dominated much of the top prices, with the second 4400gns bid given by John and Michael Hunter of the Ardmore herd in Northern Ireland, for Carnell Snowdrop 477 VG85-3yr. A grand-daughter of the great Carnell Snowdrop 185, then made 4200gns to Gilmour and Kevin Lawrie of the Brieryside herd from Monkton, Ayrshire. Carnell Snowdrop 468 which classified VG88 in her second is by Cuthill Towers Elpasso and sold sexed to Hunnington Fantasy.
