It was a day to remember for Jean Mackay, Auchenairney, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, when she sold the rising yearling heifer, Harelaw Star for a new British Blue heifer record of 23,000gns at the January society sale staged at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Having stood overall champion in the pre-sale show, judged by Jonathan Crowther, Making Place herd, West Yorkshire, he commented: "she is an excellent heifer and just my type. She is still very young and certainly something to keep an eye on, she has it all from style, character and correctness. She caught my eye straight away and didn't take a lot of choosing."

Already successfully shown at Agri Expo, Stars of the Future and LiveScot, she is by the record breaker 21,000gns, Henlli Wishmaster, out of a previous show female Woodend Leonna, which was bought in 2017 at Carlisle, and is proving to be a great flush cow. Having 15 embryos this one has always been the star, and is just the third female to be sold from the herd.

Having been spotted at LiveScot it was Blair Duffton from Huntly, that took her home.

Ross and Elaine Pattinson,Temon, Low Row, Brampton, sold their top price female for 4500gns in the form of Top Side Robyn to Messrs Evans, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire. Second place in the pre-sale show, this August 2021 born girl is sired by Naby Golddust and out of Top Side Lexi, which goes back to Bringlee Carlos.

Among the bulls it was Robert Paterson and family’s Auchenlay herd from Dunblane, that secured the top two prices of 15,500gns and 12,000gns.

Dearest of the two stood first place in the pre-sale show which came in the form of the May 2021 born bull, Auchenlay Ranger. Graham Coates, Stainforth, Settle, North Yorkshire, got for his money a son of Sandyvale Jagerbomb, which stood supreme at the Royal Highland Show in 2018, and bred the Highland 2019 reserve champion, which went on to sell for 10,000gns. The dam, Auchenlay Jen, has bred well for the herd with a lot of females retained.

The latter was a similarly aged bull by the same sire, christened, Auchenlay Rolo. This one is out of Auchenlay Myla which has bred bulls to 10,000gns having stood fourth in the pre-sale show this one found a new home with Daniel Whiteford and Co, Scremerston, Berwick Upon Tweed.

The reserve male champion, Top Side Richy again from Ross and Elaine Pattinson, achieved their top price to date of 10,000gns. This March 2021 born bull is a son of Fleuron De Maffe, and out of Top Side Isla, which has calved naturally six times, as well as previously being on the show circuit, having stood female champion at the Royal Highland and breed champion at the Great Yorkshire. Brian Fawcett took this boy home to Bishopdale, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Abington Pablo stood pre-sale male champion and overall reserve for Ian McGarva, Nether Abington, Abington, Biggar, having won junior champion and reserve male champion at the Royal Highland Show last year, he went on to make 9000gns. This September 2020 born bull is a son of Rocco De La Hasse, and out of Abington Monica, whose full sister, Abington Lily, was a successful show cow. This boy now travels north with Ronnie Downie, Crathie, Ballater, Aberdeenshire.

On the same price tag was the second prized bull, Brennand Paddy from Jeff Walker and sons, John and Rob, Brennand, Clitheroe. Previously on the show circuit down in England this one's pedigree features the sire, Bringlee Volkawagon, onto Brennand Jenny, which goes back to Cromwell Fendt. Messrs Yeats, Coanwood, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, was the final bidder.

Lanarkshire breeder, Blair and Shona Comrie, Stonebyres, Lanark, sold their rising two-year-old bull, Stonebyres Rembrandt for 6500gns to Messrs Hodgson, Egremont, Cumbria. This third prized bull is the first crop of sons from Stonebyres Ninja and bred from Stonebyres Nifty, which goes back to Tamhorn Enterprising.
