Potential buyers from as far afield as Caithness and Northern Ireland travelled to the Summer sale of Beef Shorthorn cattle at Longtown, where trade peaked at 4000gns for a cow and calf outfit from JH Wilson and J Dunning’s Runleymill herd, Settle.

Selling at this price was Runleymill Duchess Nancy, a four-year-old roan daughter of Chapelton Dauphin, which sold with her white calf, Runleymill Rahul at foot to RJ Steen of the Hazelbank herd.

The same home also sold the first prize cow, Runleymill Miss Ramsden with her third calf, a bull, at foot, at 2500gns to Messrs Capstick, High Lane, Newbiggin on Lune.

The reduction draft sale of 10 cows with calves from RG and HE Thompson’s Grinkle herd from Whitby, reached 2700gns for Glenarrif Newella Ruby, a four-year-old cow with heifer calf purchased by J and H Gibson, Appleton Mill, Appleton le Moors, North Yorkshire.

Grinkle Ross Daisy, by Castlemount Ross, and with heifer calf at foot realised 2400gns to Messrs Dobson, Westend, Allonby, who also went to 2300gns for Grinkle Secret Bluebell with heifer calf.

Messrs Capstick, High Lane, also went to 2300gns for Grinkle Barolo Bluebell, which again sold with a heifer calf at foot.

Champion at the pre-sale show, judged by Dan Bull was John and Matthew Thomson’s heifer Shawhill Foxglove Ruby, a Shawhill Maestro daughter that sold in calf to Shawhill Roman, for 2700gns to GW Dent, Kaberfold, Kirkby Stephen.

The reserve, an unserved heifer from JW Biggar, Chapelton, Castle Douglas, was Chapelton Sister 7403, a Chapelton Picasso daughter, that made 2000gns to Will Benson, Levens, Kendal.

In-calf heifers from David and Tom Bradley Farmer’s Meonside herd from Parkgate, Dumfries sold at 2100gns and 2000gns with heifers from H and N Sloan, Burnfoot and from Shawhill at 1900gns and from Chapelton and Messrs Swinbank, Limelane at 1800gns.

The sole bull forward from J Anderson and Partners, Rowanburnfoot, made 2800gns.
