Dumfries

Extra fat and weight met resistance at C and D Auction Marts' weekly sale of primestock at Dumfries where the 821 prime lambs sold to £82 for Texel lambs from Tundergarth and 190p per kg from Dollard.

Cast ewes (547) met a similar trade on the week having peaked at £107.50 for Texels from Meikleholm with rams to £93.50 for the same breed from Kirkhill.

Only five prime cattle were cashed which saw a British Blue heifer from Pendicle top the trade at 233p per kg.

Cows were sharper on the week with the 37 beef types selling to 131p per kg and £959.30 for an Angus from Edingham, while the 18 dairy cows peaked at 137p and £945.30 from Drum.

Overall, beef cows averaged 99p per kg with dairy types at 80p.

Forfar

AT FORFAR, five bullocks averaged 248p per kg and 18 heifers cashed in at 242p at Lawrie and Symington's weekly primestock sale.

Heifers were topped at 268p for a 542kg Limousin from Nethermyres and £1537.50 for a 625kg Simmental from Gask.

A Limousin from McEwan Farms, led the bullocks to 255p, while a similarly bred 624kg entry from Gask made 248p.

The entry of five cast cows was topped at £1100 for a Simmental from Cairntack.

Prime lambs averaged 168.8p (+5.6p) for 609 having met a sharper demand. Top price was 206.7p for 45kg Texels from Over Baldinnie and £98 for 48.5kg from Clochie.

Cast ewes and rams (188) sold to £90 on three occasions for Texels from Clochie.

Huntly

A SHORTAGE of lambs resulted in a sharper trade on the week for all classes at United Auctions' sale of 346 lambs at Huntly.

Texels weighing 60kg from Clinterty, Fraserburgh, topped the trade at 181p per kg and £112.

Among the 718 cast ewes, heavy types continued to be a sound trade, however leaner hill ewes and over fat types met a suppressed enquiry once again. Top price was £112 for Suffolks from Cranna Bridge, Aberchirder, Huntly.

Cockermouth

PRIME cattle sold to 210.50p per kg and £1351.41 for a Limousin bull from A and L Gott, Prospect House Farm, at Mitchells Livestock Company's sale of 58 cattle at Cockermouth.

The 40 cull cattle saw cast cows reach 140.5p and £1060.78 for a Limousin from Sandhills Farm, while OTM bulls peaked at 105.5p for a Limousin from Swinside House Farm and £848.22 for the same from Swinside End Farm.

In the sheep, 1406 prime lambs saw a lift in trade, with SQQs up 4p on the week to average 178.1p. They sold to 219.5p for 41kg Beltex lambs from Messrs Powley, Green Marsh, and £99 for 46kg Texels from G Rudd, Jenkin Cross.

The 391 cast ewes and rams hit a top price of £117 for Texel ewes from Hill Farm, while rams sold to £112 for Texels from Segbushwell.

Thainstone

Export weight lambs sold at much improved rates at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 863 lambs which saw prices peak at 195.5p per kg or £86 per head for 44kg Beltex from Strathore, Shapinsay.

The SQQ average as a result improved by 9.3p on the week to level at 168p for 445.

Prime cattle on the other hand slipped with bullocks and heifers falling 3.5p and 2.3p per live kg to 201.1p and 208.4p, respectively. Overall, 11 prime bullocks sold to 230p for a 590kg British Blue from Whiteside, Tullynessle and £1416.80 for a 770kg Limousin from Nether Mains, Torphins.

Limousins topped the heifers at 227p and £1583.30, with the former being a 565kg entry from Newton of Drum, Drumoak and the later being a 710kg lot from Honeyneuk, Maud.

Six young bulls averaged 183.2p, having sold to 205p and £1506.75 for a 735kg Charolais from Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt.

Cast cows were also down on the week with the 230 selling to average 117.6p, down almost a penny. Top price was 187.5p paid for a 560kg Limousin from Barns, Crathes and £1255 for a 725kg Simmental from Ha Durran, Castletown.

Ten bulls sold to 127.7p for a 1010kg Limousin from Strath Farm, Watten and £1410 for a 1260kg Angus from Easter Duthill, Carrbridge. They averaged 106p.

Stirling (Cale)

SOME 230 prime cattle comprising 102 bullocks, heifers and young bulls and 128 OTM cattle, were forward for Caledonian Marts' sale which saw entries from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, top the price per kg section in both the bullock and heifer sections.

Top price was 262p and £1577 for a Limousin heifer, while the Dandie's lead bullock, a British Blue, sold for 245p, while a Limousin from C Smith, South Flanders, led the gross trade at £1647.

Well fleshed beef cows averaged 112p, but with a lot of feeding cows forward, this resulted in the overall average of 101p. Top prices of 160p and £1200, were achieved for entries from I Stevenson, Bowridge, Denny and GL Clark, Broombrae, Auchtermuchty, respectively.

Dairy cows averaged 83p peaking at 104p from R Denholm, Wester Lochdrum, Falkirk and £760 from the same home.

Stirling (UA)

MORE than 4500 prime sheep comprising 3556 prime lambs, which averaged 164.60p per kg; and 1023 ewes and rams.

Top price was £92, paid for Texel lambs from Moor, or 202p per kg from the same breed from West Lethan.

Texels from Nether Pratis also topped the ewes and the rams at £126 and £122, respectively.

Longtown

A BETTER quality show of lambs met a similar trade on the week due to an excess of heavy and and over fat lambs at C and D Auction Marts' sale of 4406 head where the overall average was 168p with the SQQ levelling at 178p per kg.

Top price was £103 and 246p per kg paid for Beltex from Jock McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart.

Pure Texel and Beltex ewes met a premium amongst the entry of 4331 cast sheep where trade peaked at £156 for the former from from Snow Top, while rams sold to £138 for Texels from R and J Lines, Killocraw, Argyll. Overall some 361 heavy ewes sold at more than £100 to average £121.91 overall.

An increased entry of cast cows saw the entry of 40 head hit a top of 151p per kg and £1132.50 for a British Blue from JP Lee, Morley Hill, Whitfield.

Ayr

ON MONDAY, Craig Wilson sold 1906 prime sheep, to a top of £90 per head for Texel lambs from A Dalgleish and Son, Drummullan, Maybole, or 201.2p per kg for Texels from H and L Wilson, Chapelton and J Kennedy and Sons, Perryston.

The sale of 1386 lambs averaged 165.1p per kg with the SQQ at 171.3p.

All types proved harder to cash amongst the 523 cash sheep which sold to £149.50 for Texel ewes from D Gilmour, Broomknowes, with rams selling to £109.50 for the same breed from HB Dunlop and Son, South Biggart.

Blackface ewes were topped at £47.50 from G McCubbin, Mossend. Overall, 252 light ewes averaged £32.65; 241 heavy ewes cashed in at £76.85 and 15 rams averaged £44.03.

On Tuesday, the firm's prime cattle sale and offering of six dairy cattle and 46 calves and stirks saw four beef steers average 227p per kg or £1237 per head having sold to 236p for a Limousin cross from N McCulloch, Kenmuir.

Dairy-bred steers cashed in at 153p having sold to 156p for a black and white from Messrs Anderson, High Kilbride and prime heifers peaked at 234p for a British Blue cross from J Howie, Langside, to average or £1201.

A large entry of OTM cattle saw 107 beef cows averaged 95.6p and 56 dairy types at 80.2p. Top price was £990 paid for a Limousin cross from Messrs Scott, Bushglen and 131p from Messrs Smith, Thornwood, with dairy cows selling to £800 from Stair Est and R Kerr, Raith Farm and to 119.2p from Messrs Bruce, Watston.

Leading the dairy cattle entry at £1980 and £1800 were correct Holstein Friesian heifers from J Cousar, Grange of Cree.

St Boswells

REDUCED lamb numbers saw an increased trade at Harrison and Hetherington's prime sale at St Boswells where the average levelled at 170p per kg (+5p on the week) for 1274, with the SQQ at 184p.

Top price was £95 per head paid for Texel lambs from Crookston, or 218.5p for Beltex from the same home.

Ewes (356) peaked at £115 for Suffolks from Inchkeith, with rams to £135 for Texels from Upper Bolton. Heavy ewes averaged £77 with light entries at £37.

The entry of 71 prime cattle saw bullocks average 211p and heifers at 216p. Top price was £1565.10 from Upper Nisbet and 250p per kg from Bee Edge, while the cast trade which averaged 107p, peaked at £1106.30 from Birkenside and 137p from Corsbie.

Orkney

A CHAROLAIS steer weighing 610kg from Terry Coghill, Muce, topped Orkney auction mart's prime sale on Monday, selling for £1342 per head. Top price per kg was 231p, paid for a 550kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Spence, Norton.

A 720kg Aberdeen-Angus from Holland, Papay, led the cow trade at 111.1p or £800.

Leading the entry of 715 prime lambs and 115 cast sheep, was a pen of 24 Texels scaling 42kg from SA Seator, Seattersquoy, Stenness, which realised £69.50. Top per head was £80, paid for a Zwartbles from TLI Miller, Briarlea, Stronsay.

A Texel ewe from AT Rendall, Oldhall, Stromness, led the cast sheep at £106.

Lanark

Heifers from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie, produced two of the top four prices at Lawrie and Symington's prime sale on Monday, with a Limousin making 265p per kg and £1535 gross, while bullocks peaked at 236p from I Wainwright, Todhall, Cupar and £1545 from Over Quarter.

Beef cows hit a top of £1020 from Little Kype and 135p from Carmichael Estate, while dairy types sold to £735 from Auchmeddan and 106p from Blyth.

Texels topped the sheep trade which saw all classes dearer on the week. The 1494 lambs peaked at £95 per head from T and H Frame, Thinacre and 230p per kg from A Cullen, Craighead, to give an overall average of 170p with an SQQ of 175p.

Thinacre also led the cast section of 465 head with Texel ewes at £144, with rams to £114 for a Texel from Under Shieldhill.

Carlisle

A larger show 430 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward for Harrison and Hetherington's prime sale on Monday which also featured a large show of prime lambs and cast sheep.

A better show of 330 cast cows saw prices peak at £1520 for a 852kg Blonde from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, or 198p per kg for a Limousin cross from Messrs Taylor, West Wharmley.

Dairy entries were also sharper on the week, peaking at £1011 and 157.5p for a 642kg Friesian cross from Messrs Bullman and Son, Bankhouse

Some 74 prime young bulls were 5-10p dearer on the week selling to £1657 for a Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, or 229.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton.

And, a smaller entry of 30 prime steers and heifers hit a top of £1702 for Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth and 238.5p for a similarly bred entry from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.

Steers sold to £1682 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle, and 229.5p for the same cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.

A similar entry of lambs saw all classes sharper on the week to level at 175.9p (SQQ 186.77p).

Top prices of £104.80 and 262p per kg for Texel cross lambs both from Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle were achieved

Plainer ewes were cheaper on the week while heavier types were dearer selling to £127.50 from Messrs Huddleston, Round Meadows.

Castle Douglas

AN increased entry comprising 1797 prime and cast sheep was forward for Wallets Marts' sale at Castle Douglas on Tuesday where leaner, export types were good to sell while heavy, fat lambs continued to prove difficult to cash.

Overall, the 1553 prime lambs averaged 165.64p per kg with the SQQ at 169.4p, having sold to £83.80 for Beltex crosses from WD Adams and Son, Torhousekie, Wigtown, and 197.5p for Texel crosses from A Sturgess, Cullinaw.

A smaller show of 244 cast ewes and rams were topped at £104 for a Texel ram from Mossyard and £70 for Texel cross ewes from Torrs, Kirkcudbright. Blackface ewes sold to £38 from Little Fenwick with Lleyns to £53 from Poldean and Mules to £58 from Torrs.
