HORNED lambs met a massive lift at Penrith and District Farmers' fortnightly sale of store lambs which saw most pens up £10 per head.

The sale of 500 head was topped at £75 for Texels from LW Taylor, Hill Top.

Carlisle

A USEFUL entry of 891 store cattle, stirks and 272 calves met a keen enquiry, with quality well-bred, well-fleshed cattle of all ages in demand at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sales.

The 407 store steers and heifers saw a mixed trade for a poorer show, with a top price of £1330 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Holliday, Broathill, Kirkpatrick Fleming, with heifers selling to £1260 for a Limousin from Mark Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport.

Limousins also topped the weaned cattle entry at £970 for steers from Messrs Mattinson, Burthwaite, Bassenthwaite.

Stirling (UA)

Store bullocks averaged 195.04p, with dairy types at 131.15p and heifers at 188.21p per kg at United Auctions' sale of 647 stores, 147 cast and 106 breeding cattle at Stirling.

Sorn Mains topped the bullocks with a 284kg Charolais that sold for 260.60p per kg with a 699kg Angus cross from Holmbyre selling for the lead gross priceof £1380 for a 699kg AAX from Holmbyre.

Dairy bullocks were led by a 542kg British Friesian from Gateside that made 162.40p or £880.

Leading the heifer entry at 228.40p and £1160, was a 464kg Limousin from East Saucher and a 608kg similarly bred entry from Elmscleugh.

Beef cows averaged 114.05p having sold to 185.70p for a British Blue from Chartershall, and £1370 for a Charolais from Newhouse of Glamis, while dairy entries peaked at 114.30p for a Holstein Friesian from Kirkton of Beath and £805 for the same from Nyadd. The 10 dairy cows averaged 75.33p.

Breeding cattle from West Gormack saw a Simmental cross cow with Charolais bull calf make £2700; a South Devon cow with Charolais bull calf make £2450 and a 41/2-year-old Charolas bull sell for £3100.

A SMALL entry of 32 store cattle, 63 adult head of breeding cattle and 21 OTM were sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts' where a 390kg Salers topped the bullock entry at 184.6p and £720 from Coilach, Muir of Ord.

Heifers sold to 208.4p and £990 for a 475kg Aberdeen Angus from Kilmaluag House, Duntulm.

Breeding cattle peaked at £1900 on two occasions for in-calf heifers from Culmill, Kiltarlity, with in-calf cows selling to £1300 Kilmaluag House.

Cows with bull calves peaked at £1200 from Blarmore, Achentoul and with heifer calves at £1280 from Coilach.

OTM prime and feeding cows (20) sold to 97.1p for a 710kg Limousin cross from Castlecraig Farms, Nigg, and £710 for a 690kg Simmental cross from Balnabruich, Ardgay.

Meanwhile, the marts' sale of 1478 store sheep saw all classes meet a firm enquiry with the 870 lambs selling to £73 for Texel crosses from Balrailan, Duncanston, to average £41.11.

Ewes (347) peaked at £87 for a Suffolk from Bogallan, North Kessock and the 45 rams hit a top of £200 for a Cheviot from Badanloch (MacKenzie), Kinbrace.

Badanloch also topped the entry of 216 feeding sheep with a pair of Cheviot ewes.

A PLAINER offering sold at recent rates at Craig Wilson's sale of 312 store cattle where 155 beef bred steers averaged 190.2p; 20 dairy-bred types at 130.4p and 137 heifers levelled at 184.8p per kg

Top price was £1380 paid for Limousin cross heifers from J Young, North Waterland, with a similar bred entry from J Young, North Waterland selling for 223p per kg.

Lead price per kg was 231.3p for Limousin cross bullocks from Q Limond, Barskelly, with another from D Smith, Deaconhill, making £1295.

Dairy-bred steers peaked at £800 from J Drummond, Coilsholm and 138p from Ian Irving, Creechan Park.

A smaller entry of 775 store lambs, sold £5-£6 dearer on the previous sale, selling to £73 for Texels from CM Kyle, Finniebrae Farm (Neilston).

Averages improved on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 575 store cattle where bullocks averaged 212.6p (+0.8p) and heifers 207.3p (+5.7p).

Salers led the bullocks at 278.3p per kg for a pair from Braeside, Inverurie and £1430 gross for a pen of three 710kg Salers crosses from Corfeidly, Glassel.

Topping the heifer entry at 255.7p were three 176kg Limousin crosses from Home Farm, Fintray while a 636kg Charolais from Mill of Gellan, Aboyne, made £1300.

The four bulls sold to 182.6p for a 438kg Charolais from Towie, New Aberdour and £1000 for a 600kg Limousin from Mid Muirton, Forgue.

Also sold were 2548 store lambs, breeding and feeding sheep from the mainland and islands which saw 1080 store lambs sell to £75 for Texels from Strath Farm, Watten and £74.50 for Suffolks from Backerass, Westray from the 287 island entries.

Pure Texel ewes from Mains of Orchardtown, Udny, topped the 978 feeding sheep at £112.50 and the small entry of breeding rams sold to £240 for a Continental from Auchanland, Cornhill.

A mixed show of quality throughout sold at easier rates on the week at Hexham and Northern Marts' sale of 425 store cattle where an 18-20-month-old Limousin steer from Willie Patterson, Halton Red House, topped the trade at £1325

The same home also led the heifers at £1270, with another from Roman Wall, Stagshaw making the same money.

The entry of 3544 store lambs maintained the previous week’s rates with longer keep lambs and hill lambs especially taking a lift.

Top price was £91.50 paid for Dutch Texels from B Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle, while the entry of 753 Blackface lambs peaked at £61 from D and M Scott, Redesmouth.

A mixed show of cast ewes peaked at £111 for a Texel crosses from CR Fawcett, Well House, Harbottle, with hill types selling to £54 for Cheviots from N White and Sons, Bingfield Combe.

AN autumn-born bullock from Messrs MacInnes, Ruaig, Tiree, led the way at United Auctions' show and sale of 561cattle of all classes at Dalmally, last weekend, securing the overall championship, while the reserve was a spring-born heifer from Messrs MacVicar, Lephinchapel.

Overall, bullocks sold to average £646.45 per head or 213p per kilo (-£37.55 per head or -12p on the year), while heifers levelled at £529.06 or 194p (-£10.18 or -5.15p).

The dispersal of Messrs Carr's flock from Airyolland, Port William, peaked at £200 for a single gimmer sold on behalf of Crohn’s and Colitis UK to James Gittins, Wales.
