Shearlings met a flying trade at United Auctions’ multi-breed ram sale at Stirling where averages improved in virtually all sections selling to a high of £10,000 for a Bluefaced Leicester.
Such was the demand for big crossing-type Blues that no fewer than 476 shearlings averaged £1822.58 – up a massive £238.34 on last year’s event and for 19 more sold.
Topping the trade was a shearling from John and Richard Wood’s Kingledores flock from Broughton, Biggar. The father and son duo are relatively new to the breed having only sold here for the past five years.
Their big lad is sired by a £9000 Newbigging Walls tup bought at Kelso in 2024 which went on to stand reserve male and reserve breed champion at the Royal Highland in June. Bred from a home-bred ewe by Midlock Night Rider, he was knocked down to Robert and Hazel McNee, Over Finlarg, Tealing.
Mrs Obie Sharp’s Newbigging Walls flock, Lauder was another in the money selling a Blue shearling for £5500 to Finlay Robertson of the Beeches flock, West Calder. The tup which is bred the exact same way as the £18,000 shearling sold at Kelso, is sired by the T1 Carry House bought at Hawes in 2024 and bred from a ewe by the £65,000 Riddings.
The shearling along with several of those sold at Kelso, were behind the 510 Scotch Mule ewe lambs from Burncastle, Longcroft and Tollishill brought out by Alan Rogerson, Peter Lothian and James Brady that averaged £237 at Stirling, last month.
Top price amongst the Texels was £4500 paid for a shearling from Richard Close, Nethermill which sold jointly to James and Emma McAlister, Islahill, Coxhill and Dougie and Lynda Graham, Mains of Burnbank.
Suffolks reached £2700 from Colin and Fiona Wight, Carwood, Biggar selling to H Campbell, Garaphail, while cross-bred tups were topped at £2300 from Robert and Lynne Bryce, Chalmerston, Stirling, purchased by P Whyte and Sons, Wester Ochtermuthill.
Ram lambs reached £1200 twice for Texels from A MacGregor, Allanfauld which sold to J and E Lyle, Stationview and from Midlock Farms to Robert Bell and Partners, Craigo.
Non-accredited Texel shearlings sold to £1900 from J More, Townhead. It was knocked down to R McLaren, Hardiston.
Society sales from the Beltex, Blue Texel, Dutch Spotted and Lleyn breeds were also staged.
A shearling ram from Andrew Morton and family, Lochend, Denny, topped the Beltex when selling at 3900gns to Alan Wright, St Mungoes. Lleyns reached 4800gns from Farmstock Genetics, Over Whitlaw for a shearling purchased by W and N Lawrence, Blackpots.
Gimmers topped the Blue Texels and the Dutch Spotted selling to 2300gns and 750gns respectively. Dearest was a Blue Texel from Mark Wattie’s Tonley flock, Alford purchased by G MacKenzie, Fanblair.
Willam Baird, Floors led the Spotties selling to J Rountree, 6 Hawthorn Terrace.
