Texel shearlings from Ron Mackay sell to new centre record

A record entry of 201 rams sold under the auspices of the Caithness Sheep Breeders’ Association saw Mr Mackay from Occumster, not only produce the top two sellers but also the champion and reserve winners in the MV accredited Texel section judged by Peter Andeson, East Gate, East Burrafirth.

The champion made £3000 selling to TA Linklater, Stonelea, Stenness, with the second at £3000 purchased by JAC Campbell, Mayfield, who also bought Mr Mackay’s reserve champion Texel at £2800.

Mr Mackay was back in the money amongst the any other breed section, selling the champion, a Suffolk cross Texel for £1500 to Dunbeath Estate.

Suffolk judge, John Burgess, Lower House Hillwell, found his top two winners in entries from JB and L Swanson, East Murkle and also bought his choice of champion at £2500. The reserve made £1800 to Messr Swanson, Quarryside, Castletown.

MV-accredited females sold to £680 for Dutch Spotted gimmer from Knockglass Farm, Watten.

Averages: 34 Suffolk shearlings, £1330.88, (+£152.10 for one more sold); 113 Texel shearlings, £1092.90 (+£50.84 for 36 more).
