A FAMILY-RUN business is putting a unique twist on wedding celebrations – with the help of Highland cows.
Harris Highlanders, founded less than a year ago by couple Thomas Sloan and Michelle Woods, has already captured the imagination of couples looking for something a little different on their big day. The company provides wedding parties with the chance to meet, brush, and take photographs with show-winning Highland cattle – creating an unforgettable experience steeped in Scottish character.
Named after Thomas and Michelle’s eight-month-old son Harris, the pair hope the business grows and becomes one the whole family can enjoy.
At the heart of the business is a five-year-old Highland cow. Alice is no ordinary cow – she’s a champion in her own right, having taken the top title at the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston as a two-year-old. Her calm nature and striking presence have made her a natural for the role.
Thomas explained: “Alice is a magnificent Highland cow with an exceptional amount of style and presence. She has an impressive record, having been champion at the Royal Highland Show and the Great Yorkshire Show. Alice has produced an exceptional calf named Callum, who has been a joy to work with and shares a wonderful personality just like his mum.”
The herd has now grown to seven animals including Tara, who claimed reserve junior female at last year’s Highland Show, and Somasag, another docile addition set to feature at weddings in the months ahead. As Thomas explained, using show cattle brings an added sparkle: “I think it brings more of an appeal if they are show winners as well – it makes them a bit more glamorous.”
Thomas has had Highland cows since the age of 10, showing them successfully across the country while working as a joiner and farming in his spare time. Michelle, a carer currently on maternity leave, has embraced his passion wholeheartedly, helping prepare the animals for both the show ring and wedding venues. Their inspiration came from their young son, Harris, who not only gave the business its name but also the idea of sharing the gentle charm of Highland cows with others.
Couples who book Harris Highlanders can expect up to three hours of bovine magic on their wedding day. The bride and groom are invited to pose for photographs with the cattle, while family members and guests can join in too, brushing the cows and learning more about their background. The animals’ long hair, sweeping horns, and placid temperaments make them an irresistible addition to any photo album.
Adding to the experience, every booking comes with a Scottish-themed gift basket and a personalised slate plaque by artist Jan Laird, engraved with the couple’s surname – a keepsake to treasure alongside the memories.
The venture has already drawn plenty of interest, with bookings secured as far as two years in advance. Having attended several wedding fayres, Thomas and Michelle say momentum is building, with the next wedding scheduled for October.
For the family, it is about more than business – it’s about sharing their passion for a breed that embodies Scotland.
“It’s just something different at your wedding,” said Thomas.
“These are magnificent animals, and we love working with them and getting them ready for both shows and peoples weddings. To see couples and their families enjoying that is really special.”
