A RECENT survey by HSBC UK has unveiled that 76% of Scottish couples regard financial compatibility as crucial for a successful relationship.
The poll of 2000 UK adults has highlighted changing attitudes towards discussing finances at various stages of a relationship.
Among Scottish couples, 46% believe the appropriate time to talk about joint finances is when moving in together, while 42% think it’s best to wait until a financial issue arises.
Although 58% of Scottish couples admitted to having argued about money, a substantial 88% said they feel comfortable discussing finances with their partner.
This suggests a growing openness around the topic.
However, rising costs are affecting social commitments, with 32% of Scottish couples having declined a wedding invitation due to the expense involved.
Head of customer propositions at HSBC UK, Carl Watchorn, said: “This research reveals opportunities for better financial communication.
“Money talks aren’t just about budgeting – they are about trust, priorities, and building a future together.”
He added that many people still struggle to include finances in their relationship discussions, even as life becomes more expensive.
“Breaking that silence earlier can make a real difference to couples’ wellbeing,” he said.
In the context of rising living costs, Mr Watchorn also pointed out that having conversations early on about managing increasing expenses could benefit couples.
He said: “With the cost of living still rising, it’s more important than ever for couples to have open conversations about how they can manage increasing expenses.”
This survey offers a snapshot of how Scottish couples are managing one of the most challenging aspects of relationships – money – and the importance of financial compatibility in relationship success.
