THERE has been a spate of brutal dog attacks on sheep in Argyll.

Police in the region are appealing for information after three separate incidents were reported near Lochgilphead, Oban and near Craignure on the Isle of Mull recently.

  • On Wednesday, February 6, in a field near to Dunadd Farm, Lochgilphead, a small dark coloured Spaniel type dog was seen to be chasing sheep. The dog was eventually caught by the person in charge of it and taken away in a vehicle.
  • Between 4.00pm on Monday, February 11 and 4.00pm on Tuesday, February 12, in a field near to Nant Drive on the south side of Oban, a dog is believed to have attacked sheep resulting in five pregnant ewes being killed.
  • In a field near to Mull Hospital, Craignure, Isle of Mull, between 3.00pm on Tuesday, February 12 and 10.30am on Wednesday, February 13, a dog is believed to have attacked sheep resulting in two pregnant ewes being killed and a further four injured.

Sergeant Iain MacNicol from Lochgilphead police station said: "These incidents are particularly serious attacks and would have been extremely traumatic for the animals involved. Such incidents are also very emotionally distressing for the Farmers and witnesses involved.

"Dog owners have a legal responsibility to keep their dogs under control at all times and dogs should be kept on a close lead when anywhere near livestock.

"Dog owners can be prosecuted and fined up to £1000. Dog owners can also be held financially liable for damages done by a dog.”
