Prices for cattle hides have more than doubled over the year, with a 36kg skin selling for more than £1.09 per kg according to the latest data from TheSauerReport.

Values remain supported over the past few weeks too with prices having risen from £1.07 per kg in May, as a result of the reduced numbers of cattle being slaughtered and subsequent lower supplies of hides.

However, higher shipping costs to China are potentially hampering further increases with Italian tanners able to give a price advantage for European hides.

New season lambskin prices have also seen a slight improvement as demand from China firms. The report states that such lambskins are now achieving up to 50p per green skin. However, abattoirs are still being charged between 50p and £1 for removal of each green skin from older lambs and hoggs.
