A 16-month-old maiden heifer proved the star attraction at the Aberdeen-Angus Fever sale at Carlisle when selling for the lead price of 29,000gns.

The youngster, Retties Lady Ruth W15 from Jamie Rettie, Craigend, Methven, Perth, has already made her mark on the show circuit, having stood reserve champion at the breed's Winter National Show. She also boasts a first class pedigree, being sired by Rawburn Transformer and bred from the Wall Emperor daughter, Wall Lady Ruth N228 which has produced several bulls working in pedigree herds. Full sister Retties Lady Ruth E397, the 2016 overall champion at the Royal Highland Show and the Great Yorkshire, she sold from a 5000gns kick off bid for 29,000gns to Richard Hassel and Rachel Wylie of Brailes Livestock, Moreton in Marsh.

Second top price was 13,000gns paid for Gordon Rosebud V457, from the Trustees of the late Gordon Brooke, Upper Huntlywood, managed by John Elliot. Jim Logan, Pirntaton, Galashiels, was the final bidder on this August 2019-born heifer which boasts an exclusive pedigree being the sole female in the UK bred from Cudlobe Rosebud ET and sired by Musgrave Sky High. She sold due in April to Nichols Expectation

Minutes earlier, Mr Elliot took 11,000gns for his own Rawburn Elegy V876, a March 2019-born heifer by Nichols Expectation C370, from Roxburgh Mains, Kelso. She sold due in January to Rawburn Jumbo Eric, to Gordon Gray, Sunnycroft, Lindean.

Overall, the Angus Fever sale averaged £8674.17 for 18 lots, with the HW Angus 10th Anniversary Matron sale sold the same day from HW Angus, Burnside of Balhaldie, Dunblane, cashing in at £3380.68 for 66.

Top price for this herd, managed by William McLaren, was 9500gns paid by Welsh breeder, John James, Llandovery, for the five-year-old cow, HW Blackbird S182 and her June-born bull calf, HW Black Bentley X510. The cow is by Netherton Australian and out of HW Black Gold, while the calf is a son of HW Evander.
