A round up of special sales for the week to include Carlisle, Stirling and Longtown.

Carlisle

Some 400 store cattle went under the hammer at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale, where a top price of £1780 was paid for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.

Heifers sold to £1520 from Messrs Oliver, Cawfields, Haltwhistle.

Weaned cattle were topped at £1240 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Hamilton, Derrie, Port William.

Limousins also led the heifers and steers when realising £1040 for Charlesfield and £835 for Wetheral Shields, respectively.

The sale of 350 calves hit a top price of £500 for British Blue bulls from Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower, with more of the same leading the heifers at £440 from Messrs Reed, Moss Side.

Dingwall

Limousin cross bullocks led the way at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ weekly store sale when achieving 311.1p per kg for a 270kg entry from Clury Farm, Dulnain Bridge, and to £1300 for a 496kg bullock from Strone Farm, Banavie.

Bullocks averaged 229.1p, whilst heifers cashed in at 214.5p having sold to 270.9p for a 395kg Limousin cross again from Clury, and to £1270 for a 600kg Beef Shorthorn from Shawpark, Glaickmore.

A 280kg Charolais cross ruled supreme among the young bulls at 214.3p for Broallan, Beauly, and to £920 for a 445kg Aberdeen-Angus from Linicro, Portree.

Also forward were 2516 store sheep, where 1698 lambs averaged £75.23 having sold to £114 for a pen of Suffolk crosses from Greenland Mains, Caithness.

Ewes reached £125 for a Texel cross from Ballone, Abriachan, whilst a Cheviot ram from Strathan, Lochinver, made £250.

On Monday, United Auctions sold 8321 store and feeding sheep at their first Martinmas sale, where a top price of £130 was paid for Beltex lambs from Crofthead, with this section cashing in at £111.23 (+£9.79 on the week).

Texel crosses averaged £102.43 (+£10.25), with Suffolk crosses and Cheviots levelling at £104.88 (+£6.07) and £89.15 (+£11.79) respectively. Mules realised £97.81 (+£0.88) on the week, whilst Blackface £77.38 (+£9.13) and Cheviot Mules and Blue Texels balance out at £111.57 and £107.16 respectively.

Ayr

Bullocks led the way at Craig Wilson’s sale of 271 store cattle, when selling to £1460 for a Limousin from Knockterra, and to 270.3p for Charolais from Bonnyton Moor.

Heifers peaked at £1425 for another Limousin from Knockterra, and to 254.9p for a Charolais from High Woodston.

All classes of store lambs met one of the dearest trades witnessed, peaking at £119 for Texels from Messrs Currie, Bridge Farm.

On Tuesday, 103 calves and stirks sold to £410 on two occasions – for Aberdeen-Angus cross bull calves and for Angus heifers both of which were consigned by J Stewart Vance and Son, High Skeog.

Stirks reached £1010 for a Limousin cross heifer from C Taylor, South Walton, with bullocks to £990 for a Charolais cross from Alan Buchanan, Knocklaugh.

Top priced steer at £1590 was another Limousin cross this time from Geoff and James Ogle, Blackburn.

Top price at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart LLP fortnightly sale of 500 store lambs, was £125 paid for a Texel from DR and AE Little, Renwick.

A smaller offering of calves and stirks were also forward, which peaked at £810 for a Charolais bull stirk from K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields.

British Blues from J and B Donald and Son, Lamonby Hall, proved popular, with bullocks and heifers achieving £795 and £690 respectively.

Stirling (Cale)

A Parthenaise heifer from Shennanton Livestock, secured the lead price of 440p per kg and £2000 per head at Caledonian Marts' sale of 230 store cattle and suckled calves, at Stirling.

The same home also produced the lead priced bullock at 318p per kg and £1300 per head.

Included within the breeding cattle section was a sale of 70 in-calf stock cows from the dispersal of R Jamieson's, Garrochtrie herd from Port Logan, which sold to £1200.

Collective cows and calves sold to £1550 for a Simmental with a Beef Shorthorn calf at foot, from LPBZ Farming, Carie, Aberfeldy.

On Tuesday, Lawrie and Symington had 163 breeding and store cattle forward where a Limousin cow with Limousin heifer calf toped the £1280 for Meikle Coull.

Among the store cattle bullocks and heifers averaged 199p per kg and 193p respectively.

Bullocks sold to a top of £1210 for a 594 kg British Blue from Grant Milne, New Bourtreebush, and to 242.6p for a 272kg Charolais cross from S and M Mackie, The Hillocks.

A 572kg Simmental led the heifers at £1230 for DA and SL Chassar, Chamberlain Knowe, and to 241.5p for a 236kg Limousin from R McNee Ltd, Over Finlarg.

Suffolk lambs led the store trade which witnessed a top price of £106 paid for entries from Ashmore and Strone.
