James' Charrollais ewe top of the pops at Glenkens Show

Supreme overall was the continental sheep champion, a two-crop Charollais ewe from James Dean, Boreland of Kelton. Bred by Ben Radley, Loaningfoot, she was selected supreme by Jim Craig, managing director of Craig Wilson Auction Marts, based at Ayr.

“The Charollais is just a great commercial sheep,” he said.

“If you could breed commercial lambs out of a ewe like that, they would certainly sell very well. The Charollais breed is often underrated, and this ewe is a great example of the breed.”

Reserve was a Blackface ewe from the Ramsay family of Milnmark, Dalry. Their ewe which also won at Carsphairn in June, is sired by a £45,000 Auldhouseburn.

Galloway (Judge: D Cornthwaite, 3 Vendace Drive, Lochmaben). Champion and reserve – J and S Ross, Romesbeoch, with Kirkstead Lea, a three-year-old heifer that was champion at Stewartry and reserve at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire this year and champion at the Royal Highland, Dumfries, Glenkens and Moffat last year. She was shown with a heifer calf at foot by Ego of Romesbeoch. Reserve was Lea of Romesbeoch, a heifer calf by Blackcraig Bugsy Malone out of a daughter of Troloss Impeccable. Cow, heifer (2024), heifer calf, group – J and S Ross. Bull calf – P Hunter-Blair, Nether Cleugh.

Belted Galloway (Judge: D Cornthwaite). Champion and reserve – K Keiley and Daughters, Carton Croft. Champion was the yearling heifer Croft Fizz by Tobergill Yuist and out of Huntfield Yvett. Reserve at Straiton this year, she was also reserve at the Glenkens last year as a calf. Reserve was Croft Florence, a two-year-old heifer by Salt­way Zebedee out of Croft Jubil­a­tion. Reserve at Stranraer and Dum­fries. Bull – B and J Landers and Son, Bargaly. Cow, heifer calf – Dornells Estate. Heifer (2023), heifer (2024), group – K Keiley and Daughters. Bull calf – A Keswick, Muil. Belted Galloway Young Stockperson competition – 1, Amber Potts.

Beef breeding (Judge: D Morgan, Bridge Farm, Hereford). Champion – Messrs Oxley, Druchtag with the two-year-old Limousin bull, Rougemont Viscount. Bought at Carlisle as a calf at foot, he is by Homebyres Macadoo and out of Meadowrigg Octavia. Regular prize winner. Reserve – J and A McCulloch, Glentoo with a home-bred heifer. Cow, Cow with calf, heifer calf – Shennanton Livestock. Yeld heifer – J and A McCulloch. Bull, yeld pure-bred heifer – Messrs Oxley, Druchtag.

Prime cattle (Judge: D Morgan). Champion – F Wallace, Mains of Collin with the 10-month-old home-bred British Blue heifer, Swish. By a Remont bull and out of a home-bred cow, this was Finlay’s first time showing cattle. Swish will be sold later in the year. Reserve – M McCulloch with a heifer. Led heifer (2024) – M McCulloch. Beef animal from a dairy cow – A and J Craig, Craigton. Beef animal (2026) – F Wallace.

Reserve – R Jardine and Son, Upper Hardland with a home-bred ewe by a Dudlees sire. Ewe – Firm of AM Brown, Drumhumphry. Gimmer – J Wallace. Ewe lamb – R Jardine and Son.

Mules (Judge: K Ridley). Champion – W Lockhart, Culdoach with a ewe lamb sired by a Glen tup from Sandy Hunter, Wedderburn and out of a Kirkland-bred ewe purchased as a ewe hogg. Reserve at Dumfries. Reserve – M Ross, Birchwood with an Allanfauld-bred ewe that was champion at the Stewartry. Pen of three ewe lambs, ewe lamb – W Lockhart. Gimmer, ewe – M Ross.

Traditional Bluefaced Leicesters (Judge: R Blackhall, The Green, Aberdeen). Champion – RA McClymont, Kirkstead with a four-crop ewe by the L1 Ashes. Reserve inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2025. Reserve – RG Martin, Hippingstanes with a gimmer. Tup, shearling, ewe, ewe lamb, tup lamb, group – RA McClymont. Gimmer – RG Martin.

Traditional-type Bluefaced Leicester progeny show (Judge: R Blackhall). Champion and reserve – RA McClymont, Kirkstead, with a pair of aged ewes and reserve with a pair of ewe lambs by T2 Glamis. All classes – RA McClymont.

Crossing-type Bluefaced Leicesters (Judge: M Archer, Carry House). Champion – W Barrowman, Mid Knockglass with a ewe by a £10,000 Haprew, bred from a ewe by Marriforth sire. Champion here as a gimmer. Reserve – A McQuistin, Barnshangan with a gim­mer by the P56 Daw­yck bought privately from Neil Mar­ston. Champion at Wigtown, first at Stran­raer. Tup – R McTurk, Barlaes.
