The Dennison family’s Denmire Diamonds sale lived up to expectations with a top price of 8000gns and an average of £2747 for 70 Holstein cows and heifers at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

The sale from brothers Stephen, Andrew and Michael Dennison and families, following the Border and Lakeland Club event, featured no fewer than four Excellent-classified cows and 43 Very Goods that included 19 VG two-year-olds.

Sale leader at 8000gns was Denmire Ferraro Reba 192, a December 2021-born cow which sold giving 34.3kg after calving her first in February. Classified VG87-2yr, she is by OCD Ferraro and is a daughter of the VG85 SP LP50 cow, Denmire Cinderdoor Reba 98 followed by six Excellent cows several of which have produced more than 100t of milk. Reba 192 sold served to Claynook Matchless sexed, to Steven Innes of the Newmeadow herd from Drumduan, Auldearn, Nairn.

The same cow family produced the second top price when Denmire Sound System Reba 191 made 4200gns selling to the Dixon family from Beech House Farm near Wigton. Another VG87 pointed fresh heifer, she is sired by Mirabell Sound System an bred from a VG88 dam sired by Lighthouse. She boasts five Ex-classified cows with high milk yields in her pedigree.

Scott Forsyth, Baltier, Whithorn, forked out 3800gns for the similarly aged Denmire Sidekick Marie 709. She is bred from a VG86-2yr dam and is again followed by several Ex-classified cows to include five 100t cows. The sire is Walnutlawn Sidekick.

Just behind, on 3500gns, Denmire Apps Marie 649, a fresh second calver from the same cow family, sold to Messrs Oldfield, Gisburn, Clitheroe. She had recently classified Very Good 88 points in her second to complete 10 generations of cows to classify in the top grades. A daughter of Lindenright Apps, her ninth dam is the Ex94-7E SP LP140 RM 13* brood cow, Hilltop Tab Q Marie.

Minutes later, Denmire Pursuit Chrissy VG88-3yr, made the same money. This Pine-Tree I Pursuit-sired entry calved her second in February and sold served to Stantons Adorable to Nick MacKenzie, Rootfield, Black Isle.

Two sold at 3200gns with the first being another from the Marie family purchased by Messrs Gilmour, Maybole. Denmire Ferraro Maria 3, by OCD Ferraro, calved her first in April.

Denmire Solarpower Marq 1, another fresh heifer made the same money selling to Messrs Stephenson, Newby, Penrith. She is sired by Vogue Solarpower with her dam being the Ex90 SP cow, Denmire Archimedes Marq 1.

Another two were chapped down at 3100gns each. St Main Dairy Farming Company, Perthshire bought Denmire Redcarpet Pamela SP, which calved her second in February and sold served to Westcoast Seaside (sexed) and Messrs Sharp, Lyth, Kendal bought the fresh heifer, Denmire Challenger Marie 743 VG85-2yr.
