A good turnout of quality Holsteins, many bred from elite pedigrees, ensured a buoyant trade at the May Border and Lakeland Club show and sale at Carlisle, where prices peaked at 5000gns with 157 head averaging £2575.

Sale leader was David and John Brewster’s Boclair Rubels Apple Red 2, the second prize senior heifer from the herd based outside Lennoxtown, Glasgow. A great grand-daughter of the two times All American winner, Khw Regiment Apple-Red Ex96-3E, she is a sister to previous Rubels daughters that have sold for 6500gns, 5300gns and 5400gns. Apple Red 2 sold to Messrs Hastwell, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.

The Brewsters also produced champion which went on to sell for the second top price of 3100gns to the judge, Ewan Paul, Greigsland, Johnstonebridge, Lockerbie. This was Boclair Lambda Celebrity, a fresh heifer bred by Lambda and a grand-daughter of the Ex90-2E LP70 cow, Wiltor Cashcoin Celebrity and the PR Barbie cow family that features Regancrest Chassity in her pedigree. Boclair sold five heifers to average £3307.

The reserve, Stowbeck Ferraro Mavis, from Skirwith Hall Farms, Penrith, made 2800gns selling to St Main Dairy Farming. She is sired by OCD Ferraro and bred from a line of cows all classified Ex or VG going back to a 100ton Excellent cow from the Rendham herd. Stowbeck sold another 10 heifers to average £2394. Third prize senior heifer, Wormanby Hanley Ricki from Kevin and Christine Wilson of Wormanby Farms, Carlisle, made 3000gns selling to to J McCulloch and Son, Ardwell, Stranraer. This fresh heifer by Siemers Hanley is bred from the Ricki family going back to Calbret Astro Ricki.

The same buyers went to 2900gns for the Wilson’s Wormanby King Doc Arnhilda, another fresh heifer this time bred from the Ex94-6E SP LP 100 5* cow, Wormanby Mincio Arnhilda. The herd sold another four heifers to average £2625.

Just behind, on 2850gns, H Wright and Son sold Berryholme Cyprus Caramel, an April-calved heifer from near Helsington, Kendal, to St Main Dairy Farming. She goes back to Willsbro M Caramel Ex90 SP.
